During National Nurses Week (May 6 – 12, 2014), Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island presented several awards of excellence.  

The 2014 Mary Dowd Struck Award was presented to Karen Kennally, RN, BSN, CHSE, of Bristol. Kennally, a clinical staff instructor, has been a nurse at Women & Infants Hospital for 27 years. She has been described as “a born educator (who empowers) others to be the best they can by customizing educational experiences and creating learning opportunities creating a win-win for all, including patients and families.”

The 2014 Carol Opiekun Scholarship Award was presented to Erin Cote, RN, of North Scituate, a nurse on the Mother/Baby Units who has worked at Women & Infants for 10 years. Cote says that becoming a nurse “was the best decision I ever made.”

Elaine Torman, RN, of Cranston, a nurse on the Mother/Baby Units, received the 2014 Home Loan Unsung Hero Award, given annually to a nurse who performs heroic acts above and beyond the scope of their regular jobs. Elaine was at church when a man collapsed during the service. Elaine jumped into action and began to administer CPR and to use the automated external defibrillator (AED) that the church had recently acquired. It was through Elaine’s training, knowledge and quick response that she was able to save someone’s life.
