The MUSA Trial: Therapy for Mixed Urinary Incontinence

Thank you for your interest in MUSA! This study is currently closed for recruitment. However, please feel free to contact us and ask about other research opportunities!

What is Mixed Urinary Incontinence?

The MUSA study is being conducted to find the best way to treat women who have urinary incontinence due to BOTH stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and urgency urinary incontinence (UUI), also known as mixed urinary incontinence (MUI). Stress urinary incontinence is when you leak urine with sneezing, coughing, and/or physical activity. Urgency urinary incontinence (also called overactive bladder) is when you feel a sudden, strong desire to pass urine that results in leakage before reaching the toilet.

What are we studying?

We are trying to find out which treatment is best for women with MUI:

BOTOX injections in the bladder are usually used to treat the urgency part of MUI

Mid-urethral sling surgery is usually used to treat the stress part of MUI

BOTOX injections and mid-urethral sling surgery have both been shown to improve MUI symptoms, and recent studies have shown that both types of leakage may improve in women with MUI after just one of these treatments. Both treatments are standard of care for MUI.If you participate in the study you will be randomized to receive either BOTOX injections or sling surgery, like flipping a coin.

How many people will take part in this study?

Approximately 20 women will participate in the study at Women & Infants Hospital. Approximately 146 women will participate in the study across the United States. Women & Infants Hospital is part of the Pelvic Floor Disorders Network (PFDN), which includes seven sites across the US.

Will I be compensated?

All clinic visits, as well as the procedure, will go through your health insurance per normal clinical care. You will be compensated up to $275 for your participation in the MUSA trial.
