The Hassenfeld Child Health Innovation Institute aims to improve the lives of children and their families in Rhode Island through cutting-edge research, clinical practice, public health efforts, and training for future child health leaders. Our longitudinal birth cohort study, known as the Hassenfeld Study, based at Women & Infants Hospital provides a framework for maternal and child health research across several important areas, including social determinants of health, gestational diabetes, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and more. Our discoveries will lead to novel treatments that will change the lives of children in Rhode Island and beyond.

Our longitudinal birth cohort study recruits people either during early pregnancy or soon after they have given birth at Women and Infants and follows these mother-child dyads over five years to gather important information about their health. These data are crucial to investigating predictors of ASD, childhood asthma, and overweight, and obesity, as well as examining social determinants of health and gestational diabetes.
We follow participants throughout their pregnancy and then check on them and their infants annually after birth. The data we gather allows us to examine a broad range of factors that impact maternal and child health including family history, pregnancy complications, socioeconomic status, and feeding and exercise patterns.
We recruit new moms while they are hospitalized at Women and Infants after having given birth and then check in with these dyads annually. The data we gather from this group is especially crucial to our studies examining early biomarkers of a later ASD diagnosis.
The Hassenfeld Child Health Innovation Institute is built on a foundation of collaborative research covering all aspects of child health. Our birth cohort presents a unique opportunity to study maternal and child health in Rhode Island, with implications for the health of children around the world.
