Perinatal and Pediatric Pathology Fellowship

Don B. Singer Perinatal and Pediatric Pathology Fellowship Program

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and Women & Infants Hospital offers a 12-month ACGME-accredited fellowship in developmental and pediatric pathology. Training beyond the initial accredited year is available for qualified candidates. Since 1978, the program provides training in placental pathology, autopsy pathology, pediatric surgical pathology, pediatric forensic pathology, cytogenetics, molecular pathology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, hematology, flow cytometry, and transfusion medicine. Dr. Don B. Singer, who is one of the founding fathers of pediatric pathology, established the program and elevated the perinatal and pediatric pathology training at Women & Infants Hospital to national and international status. After his retirement, the program was renamed in his honor.

This program utilizes the resources and faculty of the Alpert Medical School, Women & Infants Hospital, Rhode Island Hospital, Hasbro Children’s Hospital and the Medical Examiner’s Office of the State of Rhode Island. The trainees spend an equal amount of time in perinatal and pediatric rotations. The yearly caseload includes approximately 150 perinatal and pediatric autopsies; 3,000 surgical specimens and bone marrow examinations; 700 cytogenetic samples; 250 molecular diagnostic samples; 2,500 placentas; and 1,500 examinations of early pregnancy losses. The training is provided by six full-time pathologists who are certified by the American Board of Pathology with sub-specialty in pediatric pathology.

Applicants must have a medical doctorate degree and be U.S. board-eligible in anatomic or anatomic and clinical pathology. Salary is commensurate with the postgraduate level of training. Funding is provided for national pediatric pathology meetings, and attendance is encouraged.
