About The Breast Disease Fellowship at Women & Infants Hospital

Women & Infants Hospital is the major teaching hospital in women's health care for The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. The hospital is committed to training medical students, residents, and fellows and offers several fellowships for advanced specialty training. The Breast Health Center offers a one-year fellowship in breast disease accredited by the Society of Surgical Oncologists (SSO). This fellowship accepts two fellows per year and is offered to surgically-trained physicians who have completed a residency in their specialty (i.e., general surgery, ObGyn, plastics).

Phase 1: Simultaneous Rotations & Two-week Workshop

Preferred candidates have demonstrated a strong interest in breast disease. The Breast Disease Fellowship begins with simultaneous rotations in our Breast Health Center's surgical offices and a two-week workshop in clinical research.

Throughout the course of the year, the formal clinical rotations include:

  • Radiation oncology
  • Medical oncology
  • Radiology
  • Pathology
  • Plastics
Phase 2: Begin Seeing Patients

In September, the fellows begin seeing patients in the Breast Health Center’s surgical offices with attendings, and ultimately, managing their own surgical sessions. The breast fellows are responsible for supervising the 2nd year ObGyn residents who join the Breast Health Center for scheduled rotations throughout the year. Additionally, the fellows oversee other rotating residents and medical students.

Ongoing education activities include:

  • A weekly prospective multidisciplinary tumor board.
  • Weekly didactic sessions
  • A monthly journal club
  • Monthly psycho-social rounds

Participate in Clinical & Science-Based Research

Research is an integral part of the Breast Disease Fellowship and the program affords fellows a foundation for pursuing the investigative and scholarly aspects of breast disease. The Breast Health Center actively participates predominantly in clinical research with an opportunity to participate in basic science research to advance the knowledge and treatment of breast cancer. As part of the Program in Women's Oncology, fellows gain experience with such multi-institutional research groups as:

Experience Comprehensive Breast Health Services

The umbrella of comprehensive breast health services provides a continuum of care with many dimensions including:

  • A multidisciplinary team of physicians which functions as a health care model convening weekly in the open forum prospective Tumor Board.
  • Representative disciplines of general surgical oncology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, plastics, and palliative medicine psychiatry.
  • On-site Tumor Registry and data management.
  • Outpatient chemotherapy and IV treatment unit.
  • Oncology social workers, nutritionists, and pharmacists on site, integrated as part of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Continuing medical education for the community.
  • Humanistic decision-making, program-based home care, and hospice services.
  • A nationally recognized lymphedema program.
  • Chemotherapy and follow-up, and numerous support groups for patients and their families.

Application Information & Deadlines

All interested candidates are required to submit their applications electronically to the Society of Surgical Oncologists (SSO).

To foreign applicants from a general surgery residency who require visa sponsorship: Regretfully, per ECFMG, since we are an ObGyn residency hospital that does not have a general surgery residency program, we are not able to sponsor visas for those applying from a general surgery residency.

  • One copy of completed application form
  • Current curriculum vitae
  • Personal statement
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation from persons best qualified to vouch for the character and professional qualifications of the applicant
  • In-service scores
  • A creative piece (favorite poem, song lyrics, artwork, etc.), this does not have to be an original piece of work
  • A 2 x 3 inch photograph

Per SSO, applications are only accepted from December 19, 2022 to January 20, 2023.
Interview dates are April 12, 2023 and May 15, 2023.
