If you have been diagnosed with cancer, your physician needs to determine the "stage" of the disease to recommend the best treatment. The "stage" of a cancer describes the extent of the disease and is assigned based on assessment of factors which may include size, invasion of nearby organs, and spread to other areas in the body.
The da Vinci® Surgical System is often used by gynecologic oncologists at Women & Infants for a procedure called "cancer staging."
To stage your cancer, the surgeon may need to remove lymph nodes, which are collections of cells that act as filters throughout the body. In many gynecologic cancer cases, the surgeon will remove lymph nodes that run along the blood vessels that surround the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. Robot-assisted laparoscopy is a tool that gives the surgeon great precision, allowing for careful dissection of these areas.
