A Class Just for You

Pregnancy is a time of change and new experiences. You experience feelings, both physical and emotional, that you may have never experienced before. It is a big change to all areas of your life. It is also a learning experience for you, your partner, and your family. To help you adjust to these factors there are educational classes offered in many areas including, childbirth, exercise during pregnancy and parenting. There are also classes to help others in your family such as grandparents and siblings.

Childbirth Preparation

All-Day Childbirth Preparation This class offers all the benefits and information as the three-week Childbirth Preparation Series in a convenient, one-day class on the weekend. Available in Providence and East Greenwich.


Alternative Birthing Center (ABC) All-Day Childbirth Preparation - This one day class prepares expectant parents for their birthing experience in the ABC with the support of a certified nurse midwife. Topics include the signs and stages of labor, physical and emotional preparation for birth, and basic labor breathing and relaxation techniques. Birthing films will also be shown. Available in Providence and East Greenwich.


Breastfeeding This 2 1/2 hour discussion class gives you all the information you need to breastfeed your baby. Topics include preparing for nursing, avoiding common problems, and pumping and storing of milk. Partners are encouraged to attend. Available in Providence and East Greenwich.


Caring for You and Your InfantThis class is highly recommended for new parents-to-be and their partners. You will receive answers to many of your questions and concerns regarding the care of the postpartum mom and the new baby. This comprehensive class covers postpartum adjustment, newborn feeding, diapering, swaddling, comforting, bathing, burping and everything in between. Available in Providence and East Greenwich.


Childbirth Preparation Series During this three-week evening series, first-time parents will learn about the stages of the childbirth experience. Topics include signs and stages of labor, birthing films, physical and emotional preparation for birth, medical interventions, basic labor breathing and relaxation techniques. Available in Providence.


Hospital Tour We'll provide you with a walking tour of the hospital and discuss all the little details about your hospital experience including hospital policies and what to bring with you to make your stay more comfortable.


Marvelous Multiples Childbirth Preparation This class is a specialized program for expectant parents of twins, triplets and other multiples. A one day class that covers healthy lifestyles as well as the physical and emotional challenges of a multiple pregnancy. The class will also address the signs and symptoms of labor, relaxation and breathing techniques, medication and anesthesia, the role of the labor partner and the hospital experience. Available in Providence and East Greenwich.


Planned Cesarean Birth If you know you are having a Cesarean delivery, this two-hour class can help relieve any anxieties and answer your questions. We will discuss medications, relaxation techniques, the surgical procedure, recovery and breastfeeding issues. Available in Providence.


Online Childbirth eClass Can't come to class? We'll come to you! Our new online childbirth eclass, Understanding Birth, is the perfect alternative for busy parents needing a flexible class schedule or for moms on bed rest. Have you given birth before? This online class is a great refresher course! While nothing can replace the personal connection of an on-site childbirth class, you’ll learn the same essential information, including:

  • What’s happening to your changing body.
  • How you’ll know when you are really in labor.
  • Helpful comfort techniques, advice for partners.
  • Overview of medical procedures, and much more.

Just for Siblings

Toddlers Class - Your toddler is about to become a big brother or sister. Join us for a one hour age appropriate program, activities, and a tour that will help prepare your child for the new arrival. Each sibling will receive a free t-shirt!


Preschool Class - This 1 1/2 hour class will help prepare your child to be a big brother or sister. The class provides age-appropriate activites and a tour to familiarize your child with the hospital setting.


School Age Class - Your child is about to become a big brother or big sister. This two hour class and tour will help prepare your child for the new arrival. Age-appropriate information and activities are all part of this session. Each child receives a free tee-shirt.


CPR & First Aid

CPR for Family and Friends - Everyone should know what to do if a passerby is having a heart attack, a stroke, or if someone is choking or having diffuculty breathing. This 3 hour class will provide participants will the tools to perform CPR on adults, children and infants.


Heart Saver CPR - AED - This 3 hour course covers CPR using a barrier device and an AED as well as choking relief skills for infants, children, and adults. Two year certification card is provided upon course completion.


Heart Saver Pediatric First Aid CPR-AED - This 5.5 hour course covers first aid skills including finding the problem, stopping bleeding, bandaging, relieving choking, using an epinephrine pen, and CPR using a barrier device for infants and children. Two year certification card is provided upon course completion.


Additional Classes

Grandparents Class - This special class enhances the bond between expectant grandparents and the new family. The entire family is invited to find out what’s new and not so new in childbirth and infant care. A tour of the hospital is included.


Managing Family Finances - This class offers all the benefits and information as the three-week Childbirth Preparation Series in a convenient, one-day class on the weekend.

For more information or for class schedules, please call the Health Education Department at Women & Infants at (401) 276-7800. All childbirth classes are scheduled according to your due date. To ensure satisfactory placement, please register no later than your fifth month of pregnancy.
