Division of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery
Many women face personal health problems that impair their quality of life. Most of these conditions are unique to women - including urinary incontinence and genital prolapse. Many women are unaware that effective medical solutions to these uncomfortable, and frequently disabling conditions, do exist.
Women & Infants is one of just eight medical centers from across the US, and the only one in the Northeast, to be selected by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to participate in the national Pelvic Floor Disorders Network (PFDN), working collaboratively to develop and perform research studies related to women with pelvic floor disorders.

Urinary Incontinence
If you are incontinent, you are not alone. There are more than 10 million women who suffer from incontinence in America today. That's about one in four between the ages of 30 and 59. Just in Rhode Island, that amounts to more than 50,000 women coping with the problem.

What causes incontinence?
There are a wide variety of reasons why women become incontinent. It could be the result of pelvic muscle damage from pregnancy, infections, spinal injury, drug side effects, or the result of other conditions such as obesity or diabetes. Frequently there is a common family inherited predisposition to pelvic support weakness, leading to bulging pelvic discomfort and urinary incontinence.
