Integrated Care Program brochure
Aquidneck Island-Center for Health & Well-Being
It is the “little things” - a poem, music, visit from a pet, massage - offered to simply improve the moment, which make an enormous difference. While alternative therapies are not a substitute for proven cancer treatments, they can improve the quality of life for some patients and their families.
Integrative therapies are offered in Providence, Middletown, and South County, RI, and Fall River, MA. For appointments in Providence, call (401) 274-1122, ext. 7143; in South County or Middetown, call (401) 846-0042; or in Fall River, call (508) 235-3500.
Acupuncture, practiced around the world for thousands of years, was developed from traditional Chinese medicine to treat a variety of symptoms and diseases. The classic explanation is that acupuncture treats energy imbalances in the body and any resulting symptoms by activating the body's own healing potential. Acupuncture is widely recognized for relieving pain, enhancing immunity, increasing energy or fertility, treating and preventing diseases, and boosting relaxation and general well-being.
The acupuncturist uses sterile needles the size of a hair to stimulate the body's energy channels. The needles rarely cause any discomfort and the treatment is safe and gentle. Researchers believe that stimulating specific acupuncture points can help manage the side effects of cancer treatment such as nausea, neuropathy, headaches, pain and discomfort.
One-hour sessions are $35 for oncology patients, their caregivers and senior citizens, and $50 for the general public.
Animal Companion Program
The therapeutic use of animals as companions has become increasingly popular. Animals provide valuable contact for patients confined for treatment and they are known to boost morale, relieve depression and decrease anxiety and stress. Our dog visitation program gives patients and their families a constant source of comfort and a healthy diversion from the usual hospital routine. Animals in this program are carefully chosen for their friendly disposition, and they are confined to the areas where patients want their company. There is no need to register for this program, which is free.
This 5,000-year-old holistic medicine focuses on all of life's aspects - physical, emotional and spiritual - and offers timeless remedies to the stresses and illnesses of the body and mind. At the heart is the understanding of the human constitution. Ayurveda practitioners believe constitution influences functional patterns such as appetite, sleep, reaction to stress, concentration and more. A person's constitution determines the best exercise, meditation, sense therapies and daily routine to stay healthy. The goal is to create a lifestyle that meets your unique needs to achieve optimal health. Individual consultations and group sessions are offered. Call us for more information.
