ONWARD Campaign Summary

The largest capital campaign in Women & Infants Hospital’s history closed on September 30, 2009, having exceeded $22.9 million in gifts and pledges during the past five years. There were many highlights during the ONWARD Campaign, co-chaired by Anne and Michael Szostak, who led a steering committee of volunteers from the broader community and the hospital.

Spurred by an unprecedented five challenge grants made by The Champlin Foundations, The Kresge Foundation, John and Letitia Carter through the Carter Family Charitable Trust (two challenge grants), and Jack and Judith Remondi, these gifts, totaling $4.5 million, leveraged $9.5 million in gifts and pledges. Employees and medical staff contributed over 10 percent of the Campaign’s total.

The Campaign was the recipient of more seven-, six-, and five-figure gifts than any previous campaign. Seven-figure gifts accounted for $7 million, or 33 percent of the total raised; six-figure gifts accounted for another $8.9 million, or 41 percent of the total; and five-figure gifts represented over $3.8 million, or 18 percent of the total. While almost one-half of the Campaign target was contributed by individuals, corporations and foundations contributed over $6 million.

Over 750 of the donors to the Campaign were first- time donors to the hospital, and over 1,500 donors made gifts, including unrestricted gifts, to the annual fund and the brick paver walkway program.

Special events raised more than $1.4 million, most of which is attributable to the three celebrity luncheons held by the hospital. The 2008 Celebrity Luncheon, presented by Summer Infant Inc., featuring Sigourney Weaver, raised over $650,000.

The Campaign concluded with a series of events – INweek, held between September 9 and 14, 2009. Led by Presenting Community Partner, Hasbro, Inc., events included leadership and employee donor appreciation days, an INparty reception and celebration, community brunch and open house, dedication of the brick walkway, and the official ribbon-cutting. Joining Hasbro, Inc. as sponsors for the events were Signature Community Partners – Bank of America, and Ashen + Allen; and Community Partners – CVS Care- mark; Walsh Brothers, Inc.; Heather M. Campbell, Michelle and David Renaud, DDS; and Women & Infants’ Department of Medicine.
