There are several community hospitals with special care nurseries that are directed by neonatologists from our faculty. These include Kent Hospital (Warwick, RI), Charlton Memorial Hospital (Fall River, MA), St. Luke's Hospital (New Bedford, MA), Backus Hospital (Norwich, CT) and Sturdy Memorial Hospital (Attleboro, MA).

Through the dedicated service of the physicians, nurse practitioners and staff in these facilities, these partnerships provide outstanding, community-based care to low birth weight infants born in their facilities and infants from Women & Infants Hospital who no longer require intensive care.

Skilled neonatal transport and consultation is available twenty four hours a day, all days of the year. In 2004 almost 200 newborns were transferred to our facility, and more than half were returned to community hospitals for convalescence closer to their families.
