Women & Infants' Alternative Birthing Center (ABC), the only birthing center in Rhode Island, offers an option for families who want a home-like setting with minimal hospital intervention, but maximal assurance of safety. Please talk to your provider if you wish to receive more information about delivering in the ABC. Expecting mothers who are planning to give birth in the ABC can register online.
There is a living area where families stay during early labor, a whirlpool, a kitchen to bring food for after the birth, and a private bathroom.
Other features of the ABC are its weekly support group for mothers, annual reunion of the families that delivered over the previous year and prenatal classes specific to ABC.
Traditionally families stay in the ABC for 4 hours after the birth and then go to postpartum unit for the typical 2 day stay. Some families may choose to go home 6-12 hours after birth of baby, with medical approval from their health care providers.
