Nobody thought Brett was going to live

Brett Andrew Nadrowski was born on 2/9/04 at 24 weeks. He weighed 1 lb. 7 oz. or 650 grams and was 15 inches long. We were so happy our baby was here because we had waited so long and went through so much to conceive him. But it is so hard to stay happy when you know it is way too soon for him to be here, and you could lose him anytime.

Nobody thought Brett was going to live. The next 149 ½ days spent in the NICU were the hardest days of our lives. Brett had three primary nurses – Maureen, Jenn and Kim – who were great to us and especially to him. We also had great support through the doctors and respiratory. You get to know them pretty well when your son just loves the ventilator. He spent 78 days on one. I probably could write a book about those five months we spent going back and forth to the NICU and all that went on. But our happiest day was on July 1, 2004 when we got to bring Brett home. He weighed 8 lbs. when he came home, and he also had his oxygen and pulse ox in tow. At that point it would have been weird not to have that stuff, we were so used to it.

The first few weeks we were nervous, we were so used to having his nurses there. But we settled into a routine, and before we knew Brett was turning one. It hasn’t been hard raising a preemie. I don’t think we would know how to raise a full term infant. Raising a preemie you’re just a little extra careful especially when it comes to germs. And you also have to remember those milestones may take a little extra time to reach.

Today Brett is a normal, healthy, active 2-year-old. He only has a speech delay, but he knows what he wants and how to get it. He loves books and music and especially animals. Oh, and he loves to climb. We call him our little monkey. He also loves to play at Gymboree and outside.
