Woman And Infants
The SCIPP at Women & Infants of Providence RI brings together a multidisciplinary team to consult on cases of women whose pregnancy, or plans for pregnancy, are complicated by a medical condition. The only program of its kind in the United States, this weekly tumor board-style conference brings together a multidisciplinary team of obstetrical medicine internists, obstetricians, specialists, pharmacists, and nurses to provide preconception counseling or discuss recommendations for care during pregnancy, delivery and the postpartum period for women whose pregnancy is complicated by a medical condition.
"Pregnancy is a joyful time for many families, but it can also be stressful, especially for women with complicated or unusual medical problems. We believe that every baby deserves a healthy mother for the long term. And the team approach of the SCIPP program will provide the best possible care in a way that is most convenient for the mother and her baby."

What is SCIPP?

Coordinated by the Center for Obstetric and Consultative Medicine, the Women & Infants Hospital Specialty Care in Pregnancy Program (SCIPP) has two components: a weekly conference and a weekly patient clinic. Both are held on Fridays.

The weekly conference brings a multidisciplinary team together to consult on cases of women whose pregnancy, or plans for pregnancy, are complicated by a medical condition. The team discusses preconception counseling and recommends a plan of care for the patient's pregnancy, delivery and postpartum period.

Each week, there is an area of focus: Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Hematology, Pulmonology, or Rheumatology. Patients are discussed by obstetric medicine (OB Med) physicians, obstetricians, a specialist (e.g., cardiologist, hematologist, etc.), pharmacy, anesthesia, labor and delivery nurses, and other disciplines as needed.

Following the SCIPP conference, a small team comprised of an OB Med physician, OB Med fellow, a specialist, and a registered nurse sees SCIPP patients. At these visits we examine the patient, arrange for additional testing and follow-up, and share our recommendations for the plan of care with the patient.

A coordinated plan is developed in collaboration with the patient's referring health care provider.
