Maternal-Fetal Medicine Faculty Physicians/Fellows

Katharine WenstromKatharine D. Wenstrom, MA, MD, is Director of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM), and a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Dr. Wenstrom received both her bachelor's and medical degrees from Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, and a master's degree in Pathology from Columbia University in New York. She completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology and her fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at the University of Illinois in Chicago, followed by a fellowship in medical genetics at the University of Iowa. She is one of fewer than 50 individuals in the country who are triple board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, maternal-fetal medicine, and medical genetics.

Dr. Wenstrom is past president of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, the primary society for MFM subspecialists around the world. She has also served on the executive board of directors of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and as head of the National Institutes of Health Obstetrics and Maternal Fetal Biology Subcommittee. She has authored more than 150 original papers and scholarly publications, is a coauthor of two editions of the textbook Williams Obstetrics, and is editor-in-chief for obstetrics of the journal Obstetrical and Gynecological Survey. She has been listed in Guide To America's Top Physicians, Academic Keys Who's Who in Medical Sciences Education, and Castle Connolly's Top Doctors, and has been elected to "Best Doctors in America®" and "The Best Doctors for Women."

Her clinical and research interests include genetic screening, fetal diagnosis and therapy, and teratology.


Brenna AndersonBrenna L. Anderson, MD, MS, is Chief of the Reproductive Infectious Diseases Consultative Service at Women & Infants and an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Warren Alpert Medical School. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Rhode Island and her medical degree from Brown University. She completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology and a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. She also earned a master's degree in clinical research and completed a fellowship in reproductive infectious diseases and immunology at the University of Pittsburgh. She is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

In 2006, Dr. Anderson was selected for the Women's Reproductive Health Research (WRHR) Career Development Program at Women & Infants/Brown University, which supported her investigations of the immune system in pregnancy. In 2009, she received a National Institutes of Health (NIH) K23 Mentored Patient-Oriented Career Development Award to study mucosal immunity in the acquisition of HIV. Dr. Anderson has served as the leader of the Infectious Disease Special Interest group for the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, and is currently the alternate principal investigator for the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Research Network at the hospital.

Her clinical and research interests focus on the ante- and intra-partum care of infectious diseases in pregnancy.


Stephen CarrStephen R. Carr, MD is Director of the Prenatal Diagnosis Center and Maternal–Fetal Medicine Diagnostic Imaging at Women & Infants Hospital, Co-Director of the Fetal Treatment Program, a co-operative effort of Women & Infants and Lifespan, and a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Dr. Carr earned his bachelor's degree at Middlebury College and his medical degree from the University of Hawaii. He completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Illinois in Chicago and his fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at Women & Infants. He is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine, and is listed in Castle Connolly's Top Doctors.

Dr. Carr's clinical interests include fetal sonography and invasive diagnostic and therapeutic techniques. His research interests include evaluation and management of twin to twin transfusion syndrome. Dr. Carr is a colonel in the Rhode Island Air National Guard and is commander of the 143rd Medical Group.


Chien_Edward

Edward K. S. Chien, MD, is the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship Director at Women & Infants and an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Dr. Chien earned his bachelor's degree at the University of Illinois in Urbana and his medical degree from the University of Illinois in Chicago. He completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Michigan Medical Center, and his fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at the University of Chicago. He then completed a three-year postdoctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Graeme I Bell in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, funded through the Reproductive Scientist Development Program as the March of Dimes Fellow. He is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine.

Dr. Chien's research interests focus on understanding the mechanisms responsible for prematurity, focusing on cervical remodeling and maternal physiology.


Coustan_Donald

Donald R. Coustan, MD, is Director of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine's Prenatal Diabetes Program, and a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. He was Chairman of the Department from 1991 to 2008. He earned his bachelor's degree in psychology summa cum laude and his medical degree at Yale University, and completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Yale University.

Dr. Coustan is a past president of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, past chairman of the American Diabetes Association, and has held numerous other national positions. He is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine.

Dr. Coustan is an internationally recognized expert on the management of diabetes in pregnancy, and is the author of more than 200 research papers and scholarly publications, many of which deal with diabetes.

Tanya Dailey, MD, is Director of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Clinic at Women & Infants, and a clinical Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She received her bachelor's degree in human physiology from Boston University and completed both medical school and a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Tufts New England Medical Center.

Dr. Dailey did her Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship at Women & Infants, with a thesis on TGF expression in the pregnant rat cervix and its role in cervical remodeling. She is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, as well as maternal-fetal medicine.

Her research interests include pre-term labor and cervical insufficiency.


OBrien_BarbaraBarbara M. O'Brien, MD, is Director of Perinatal Genetics, Co-Director of Women & Infants' Prenatal Diagnosis Center, Associate Director of the third-year medical student Core Clerkship in Ob/Gyn, and an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She received her bachelor's degree from the College of the Holy Cross and her medical degree from New York Medical College. She completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology, a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine, and a fellowship in medical genetics at Tufts New England Medical Center.

Dr. O'Brien is one of fewer than 50 individuals in the country who are triple board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, maternal-fetal medicine, and medical genetics. Her clinical interests include fetal sonography, invasive techniques for the diagnosis of chromosomal and genetic disorders, and the diagnosis and treatment of twin to twin transfusion syndrome.


johnson_julie

Julie Johnson, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and her medical degree from Wake Forest University. After completing her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of South Carolina, she came to Women & Infants for her Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship.

Dr. Johnson is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and board eligible in maternal-fetal medicine. Her research and clinical interests include fetal cardiac function in growth restricted pregnancies and mechanisms and abnormalities of labor and delivery.


Dr. Matthew EspositoMatthew Esposito, MD, is a clinical Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. He received his bachelor's degree in biology summa cum laude from Williams College, and his medical degree from the University of Rochester.

After completing his residency at the University of Maryland, he did his Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship at Women & Infants. He is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine. Dr. Esposito is an expert in ultrasound and prenatal diagnosis, and his research interests include aspects of cesarean delivery and clinical problems in obstetrics.


Dr. Dwight RouseDwight J. Rouse, MD, MSPH, is the Brown/Women & Infants principal investigator for the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units (MFMU) Research Network, and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. He received his bachelor's degree from Harvard University, his medical degree from the University of Illinois in Chicago, and his master's degree in public health from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine.

Dr. Rouse is an author of the 23rd edition of Williams Obstetrics, a past member of the editorial board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and editor-in-chief for obstetrics of the journal Obstetrical and Gynecological Survey. He has authored more than 150 original papers and scholarly publications. Through the MFMU, he has led studies on the prevention of prematurity in twins, and the prevention of cerebral palsy with magnesium sulfate. His research and clinical work are focused on clinical obstetrics, particularly labor management.


Nicole SprawkaNicole Sprawka, MD, is the third-year Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellow. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Texas and her medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern. She completed her residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Texas, and is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology.

She is working with the Department of Laboratory and Pathology Medicine to study prenatal screening for chromosomal abnormalities.


Roman Starikov, MD, is the current second-year Fellow. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Texas in Austin and his medical degree from Texas A & M College of Medicine. He completed his internship at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York and his residency at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA, after which he spent two years as an Assistant Professor at Tufts University School of Medicine. He is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology. He is currently studying the relationship between maternal diabetic control and fetal cardiac defects.


Hector Mendez- Figueroa, MD, is the current first-year Fellow. He received his medical degree from the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Honduras, and completed his residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Texas. His research interests include premature rupture of the membranes and OTC deficiency in pregnancy.
