Women & Infants' Alternative Birthing Center (ABC), the only birthing center in Rhode Island, offers an option for women having a low-risk pregnancy who want to to give birth in a low-tech, home-like setting. The ABC is located next to Women & Infants’ Labor/Delivery/Recovery Unit, allowing for a quick and seamless transfer to that unit should the need arise.
The ABC features a room with a double bed, as well as other furniture and equipment to support the many and various labor positions, with lots of space to move around. It also has a living area where families can stay during your labor, a whirlpool tub in a private bathroom, and a kitchen to bring food after the birth.
When you choose to deliver in the ABC, you have two options after the birth. You may stay in the ABC for 4 hours after the birth of your baby and then go to a standard postpartum room for the typical one or two day stay. Or you may choose to go home directly from the ABC 6 to 12 hours after the birth of your baby, once you have gotten approval from both your midwife and pediatrician.
Please talk to your midwife or obstetrician if you want further information about having your baby in the ABC. If you plan to give birth in the ABC, you can register online.
