Alternative Birthing Center

Women & Infants' Alternative Birthing Center (ABC) is the only birthing center in Rhode Island, offering women with low-risk pregnancies the option of giving birth in a comfortable hotel-like setting with minimal hospital intervention but the assurance of medical safety should the need arise.
The ABC features a living area where your family can stay throughout your labor, a whirlpool, a kitchen for preparing food for the family and you after the birth, and a private bathroom. Typically, families stay in the ABC for 4 hours after the birth and either transfer to a postpartum unit for 2 days or go home 6-12 hours after birth. Going home early requires medical approval from your health care provider.
Other features of the ABC are a weekly support group for mothers, an annual reunion for families that delivered in the ABC, and special prenatal classes. Talk to your provider if you want more information about delivering in the ABC. If approved by your provider, you can register for an ABC birth online.
