Here are some general guidelines to follow. Check with your doctor if you have a family history of certain illnesses.

Pelvic Exams
All women should have an annual pelvic exam beginning at age 18, or sooner if you are sexually active. If you need the name of a doctor, please call Women & Infants' Physician Referral Health Line at 1-800-921-9299.

Pap Tests
Pap test screening starts at age 21, or three years after beginning of sexual activity, and then every one to two years until age 29. Women ages 30 to 64 can have a Pap test every two to three years if three prior Paps are normal. To find a doctor, call Women & Infants' Physician Referral Health Line at 1-800-921-9299.

Mammograms
Screening mammograms should begin by age 40 and be done every one to two years until age 50. After 50 they should be done every year. Clinical breast exams should be done annually, beginning by age 20. For more about the Women & Infants' Breast Health Center, call (401) 453-7540. Colonoscopies
At age 50, all women should have a colonoscopy to screen for colon cancer. If normal, the test does not need to be repeated for 10 years. For more information about the gastrointestinal disorders program at Women & Infants, call (401) 453-7953.
