Research Focuses on Well-Being of Cancer Survivors
07/19/10
A research collaboration involving a physician with the Program in Women’s Oncology at Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island is probing the impact of exercise and relaxation on the health and emotional well-being of cancer survivors.

The Survivors RENEW study - spearheaded by the Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine at The Miriam Hospital and Don Dizon, MD, an oncologist at Women & Infants – is testing a combination exercise and relaxation program with cancer survivors between the ages of 18 and 39.

“The goal is to identify ways of promoting physical and emotional health after a person undergoes treatment for their cancer,” Dr. Dizon explained. “Survival is our focus, but treatment for their cancer irreparably alters an individual’s life. We want to make that period of survival the best possible for each person.”

Survivors RENEW includes 12 weeks of weekly telephone coaching to help participants become more physically active and learn mindfulness meditation, a form of relaxation. Survivors who participate in the study are randomly assigned to either receive this program immediately or after a delay.

Eligible participants must have been diagnosed with any form of cancer between the ages of 18 and 39, within the last 10 years, and currently be in remission. The study is being funded by the American Cancer Society.
