| Women & Infants Physician Elected Vice President of Professional Board |

Sandra A. Carson, MD, of Cranston, director of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) and the Center for Reproduction and Infertility at Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island and a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, has been named vice president of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). She is currently also an ABOG director and chair of the REI Board. Her term begins July 1, 2010.
The ABOG is an independent, non-profit organization that certifies obstetricians and gynecologists in the U.S. Founded in 1927, the ABOG is one of 24 specialty boards recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.
Dr. Carson has more than three decades of experience as a physician, much of which has focused on the field of reproductive endocrinology. In addition to her other appointments, Dr. Carson serves as chair of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Advisory Committee for Reproductive Health Drugs.
Dr. Carson has led an active career in the field of reproductive endocrinology. Since 1982, she has secured more than $6.76 million in grant funding for her research projects, including more than $5.6 million from the National Institutes of Health. Her most recent research topics have included: “The Genetics of Familial Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome;” “The Role of COUP-TF II in Endometrial Angiogenesis: Common Pathways for Implantation and Cancer;” and “The Role of Orphan Nuclear Receptor COUP-TF II in Endometrial Biology.”
Beyond her clinical and research commitments, Dr. Carson has also been active on local and national committees. She serves on the National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development’s Advisory Council and is a director of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is immediate past-vice president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and has also served as president of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine. Dr. Carson co-directs the Oocyte Donor Oversight Committee of the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine, also known as the California Stem Cell Institute.
Dr. Carson has published more than 130 abstracts, more than 60 book chapters, and six books during her career. She currently serves as editor-in-chief of Sexuality, Reproduction and Menopause, and associate editor of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is also a reviewer for seven other publications and is a member of the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics & Gynecology (CREOG).
She has been named to the National Registry of Who’s Who in American Medicine twice, the Metropolitan Who’s Who Registry, Strathmore’s Who’s Who every year since 1999, the National Registry of Who’s Who, and Castle-Connolly’s America’s Top Doctors each year since 2007. Dr. Carson was named one of the 100 top Physicians for Women by Good Housekeeping magazine, and she earned the Byford Award given to an Outstanding Alumnus by the Department of Obstetrics-Gynecology at Northwestern University each year. |
