Office of Women in Medicine

With full administrative support of the Office of Women in Medicine, the Associate Dean for Medical Faculty Affairs serves to create and maintain programs to support women’s academic needs including the following:

  • Student mentoring program
  • Promoting gender equality and preventing sexual harassment
  • Biomedical research on women’s health
  • Women’s health care issues 
  • Networking
  • Promoting professional advancement of women in medicine
  • Gender issues in curriculum
  • Faculty development

Education and Promotion Activities

In its efforts to educate medical students and faculty and to promote gender equity among its ranks, the Office of Women in Medicine has sponsored a number of programs and presentations, including:

  • Women and Coronary Disease
  • Women Physicians as Leaders
  • Choosing a Path for Career Advancement
  • Medical School Teaching: Opportunities and Importance in Career Development
  • Preparing for Negotiation: the Basics
  • Boundary Issues in the Physician / Patient Relationship
  • Women in Residency
  • Building a Stronger Medical
  • School Community
  • Eliminating Gender Stereotypes from Medicine and Medical Education

Mentorship:

One of the major initiatives of Brown University’s leadership development efforts is the Women in Medicine Mentor Program, whereby students are invited each fall to participate in activities that bring women medical students together at an early point in their professional studies with physician mentors.

Collaboration

The Office of Women in Medicine interfaces with many local, regional and national institutions including the Association of Women Medical Faculty; the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) and the AMWA student chapter at Brown; the Rhode Island Medical Women’s Association; the Association of American Medical Colleges; and agencies addressing women’s issues in the Brown community and throughout Rhode Island.
