Cancer Risk Assessment and Prevention Program

Program in Women's Oncology Breast Health Center

Cancer Risk Assessment and Prevention service, part of the Program in Women’s Oncology, addresses concerns you or your family may have regarding the risk of developing cancer.  It is a comprehensive service that takes advantage of the latest advances in the understanding of the genetic aspects of cancer and their relationship to environmental factors.

Cancer risk assessment and prevention counseling is available at Women & Infants Hospital, Kent Hospital, Landmark Medical Center and Westerly Hospital. If you are concerned about a personal or family diagnosis of cancer, cancer genetic testing, preventive and risk-reducing options, please schedule an appointment at:

  • Women & Infants: 401-453-7540. Appointments are held Monday through Friday.
  • Kent Hospital: 401-453-7540. Appointments are held the first and third Friday afternoons of each month.
  • Westerly Hospital: 401-453-7540. Appointments are held the second Wednesday of each month.

It utilizes a team approach, in the sense that patients will be given the opportunity to meet with specialists who will inform them about appropriate lifestyle changes, as well as other preventative options fostering the optimal regimen for cancer prevention. The Cancer Risk Assessment and Prevention Program team includes Robert D. Legare, MD, Medical Director; Jennifer Scalia Wilbur, MS, Clinical Program Manager; and Jessica Kent, MS, Cancer Genetic Counselor.

A two-hour consultation with a cancer genetic counselor and physician provides each participant with a comprehensive analysis of their cancer risk based on medical, familial and lifestyle factors.  Each person receives information and recommendations for a personal approach to cancer prevention, which may include recommendations for diagnostic screenings, lifestyle modifications, cancer genetic testing and chemo-preventive strategies.

Cancer genetics is a rapidly advancing field that is a refreshing approach to medicine -  predicting cancer risk with recommendations to prevent disease rather then treating disease.  The Cancer Risk Assessment and Prevention Program offers patients this exciting new approach to cancer prevention, empowering them with medical information that has proved to be life-saving for both themselves and their family members.
